If you've ever wondered how Hollywood or Apple manage to generate so much hype before releasing a movie or a new device, the key is that they don't just drop their products onto the market: they turn their marketing into an unforgettable event.
Jeff Walker explains that any entrepreneur can adapt the product launch formula to sell courses, services, or coaching programs online in a massive and predictable way
Instead of relying on a traditional, miles-long sales letter where the user just scrolls down to see the price, the strategy involves flipping this letter on its side. This is one of the core concepts within the product launch formula.
In practice, this means breaking down all that sales information into a sequence of free pre-launch content, delivered over 7 to 10 days, long before you open your shopping cart.
To generate genuine interest and educate your audience, your sequence must tell the story of your offer through three key pieces of content (usually videos):
1. The Opportunity: Your first video should show how your prospect's life can change. Whether it's reducing pain or increasing pleasure, the goal is to present the opportunity for a better life (more income, new skills, greater freedom).
2. The Transformation: In the second video, you demonstrate what that change will look like in real life. Here, it is crucial to use case studies and concrete examples of people who have already achieved results.
3. Ownership: The third step helps the user assume and visualize that change for themselves, moving from an abstract concept in the lives of others to an attainable personal goal.
During the pre-launch phase and when you finally open for enrollment, several fundamental psychological triggers come into play:
Authority: By teaching and providing real value before trying to sell, you immediately position yourself as an expert in your niche.
Reciprocity: By giving away truly useful content, the audience feels a natural desire to return the favor.
Social Proof: Encouraging comments and interactions under your videos shows new visitors that there is an active and highly interested community.
Scarcity: At the end of your launch, there must be a real negative consequence if they don't buy (the price goes up, bonuses disappear, or the offer closes). This generates massive sales spikes on the final day.
Historically, copywriters used the "Problem-Agitate-Solve" formula, but today's market is much savvier. Walker suggests using the "Problem-Solution Path." This consists of presenting a problem in your video and giving away the solution right away.
However, since every solution organically creates a new challenge, you use that new problem as a bridge or "hook" to your next video, keeping your audience on the edge of their seats until the final sale.
Applying this methodology, which is the heart of the product launch formula, allows you to educate, deliver massive value, and build total trust before asking for the sale.
